News and Notes:
Familiar/Fluency Books
Your child made it through the first week with the leveled books that were sent home. I hope that your child had a chance to read it a few times. I noticed that not all parents have initialed the Reading Log. Please initial after your first grader has read. I will send home a new book on Monday.
Field Trip to Botanical Gardens
In your child's Friday folder, there is a permission form to the Botanical Gardens. We share a bus with the other first grade. Please fill out, sign and return the form. The parent chaperones are: Amy Brockmeyer, Kristin Young, Jessica Hopfer, Pastor Rouland, and Melissa Quagliata. Please let me know if you are no longer able to chaperone so I can find a replacement.
Ways to Cope
We have been talking since the beginning of school about what to do when we have a problem. A few weeks ago, we even acted out some pretend scenarios. I have included in the Friday folder a smaller version of what we have hanging in our classroom. I am sending this home as a reference for you so that if your child talks to you about a problem that day, you can talk through the steps with your child to help him/her get through it or know what to do when they are faced with a similar problem again. A big part of first grade is learning how to get a long and we continue to learn that into adulthood.
Apple Day
We will celebrate Johnny Appleseed and explore apples all day! I will need some parent volunteers to run some apple stations on October 11th in the morning. Please let me know if you can help!
We Sing
We sing in church on October 9th at 10:30am. Meet at 10:15am in the upper level of the church to warm up. Please mark your calendars! The first graders always sound so nice!
Speech Screening
On October 3rd and 10th, a LASE speech therapist will be available for some screening. If you want your child screened, a signed permission form along with $18 is needed by Friday, Sept. 30th. The screening will let parents know if their child's speech is developmentally appropriate or if there is a need to refer for an evaluation. You will also get feedback if any concerns with voice or fluency are noticed. If you would like a form, let me know ASAP.
