Week Seven: Special Edition

We had such an exciting Johnny Appleseed Day! We learned so much about him and celebrated what he loved most...APPLES!

Everyone brought an apple to school so the first thing we did was create a graph to see who brought what color of apple.

Can you tell what color we brought the most of? We had to make our graph taller!

Then, we read a book about Johnny Appleseed:

After, we talked about the Main Idea of the story: The life of Johnny Appleseed. (We learned his real name is John Chapman - he got the nickname because he traveled around planting appleseeds)

Then we talked about the details in the story and created a list:
1. He lived in the woods.
2. He died from being sick.
3. He had 11 brothers and sisters.
4. His brother died.
5. He traveled everywhere and planted seeds.
6. He loved animals.
7. His mom died when he was young. He had a stepmom.
8. He loved planting appleseeds.
9. He liked to eat apples.
10. He was in a tree chopping contest.
11. He was friends with the Indians.
12. He might have been barefoot while he traveled.

Then we each made our own John Chapman. We put the Main Idea and one detail about him on his hat.

They turned out well! We learned so much about him already!

We spent most of our time at special Apple Stations. We had 3 parents come in to help us. Here is what we did:

At Mrs. Trampe's station, we investigated the outside and inside of apples. It took a lot of exploration to find out all we could about our apple. We weighed it, measured it, looked at the outside, inside and even tasted it! We were very busy at this station!

At Mrs. English's station, we came up with as many words as we could about apples and then we each wrote them down in an apple shape. It ended up being a nice poem in the end.

At Mrs. Nations' station, we made a book about apples falling from the tree. We used our fingerprints as apples and had to cross one out every time one fell.

We also made applesauce. We each peeled an apple, cut it up and then we cooked it all day! We added sugar, water and cinnamon.

It smelled SO GOOD cooking in our room all day! We couldn't wait to eat it!

After second recess, we read a book about how God can be compared to an apple called:

It talked about how an apple has three parts: peel, flesh and core; but it's still ONE apple. God is the same way and has three parts: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit; but still ONE God. There are MANY similarities and the book shares the most important message of how God the Father sent God the Son to die and rise again for us all!

At the end of the day, we watched a Johnny Appleseed movie and then tasted our applesauce. A lot of first graders had thirds it was so good! We ate the whole batch up!
